While there is no one way to study for the exam, below is my advice.
First, make sure that you obtain a copy of the test outline, so that you know what you're going to be tested on (link below). Also, I do recommend enrolling in a course that is focused on preparing you for the state exam. The SAFE course is only for the purpose of meeting the education requirements and giving you the foundation of what is going to be tested, but to improve your chances at passing the state exam I recommend you enroll in another course.
1. Re-write the outline and write 1-3 sentences on each topic that's covered using the information you learned in the course and your own research. Everything is available on the internet and the outline includes references as to where you can read more on each of the given topics.
2. Make flash cards from your outline. Write short, concise notes on the other side of the flash card. Your goal is to distill the key information on the other side of the card. . Take the most important points of each of the topics and bullet point them on the card. Here's a good example of some:
However, make sure you make your own. It will help you memorize and understand the concepts. Also, you will need to write the information in a way that makes sense to you. Even if you enroll in an exam prep course, you should still make flashcards, you will get more out of any prep course this way.
3. Read the article below, while it's from 2011, it provides valuable information that you can use to improve your odds of passing the exam.
